DESCRIPTION
Community housing providers must manage tenancies in accordance with the law, and this workshop provides the foundational knowledge needed to do so confidently in a Victorian context. You’ll explore the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (RTA), with a focus on the roles and responsibilities of renters and rental providers, key legal documents, and the regulations governing tenancy functions such as rents, inspections and terminations. The session also introduces the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and highlights other regulatory frameworks relevant to community housing operations.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and structure of the Victorian RTA
- Explain the general responsibilities of renters and rental providers
- Identify and understand key legal documents including rental agreements, condition reports and disclosures
- Apply relevant legislation to core tenancy tasks including rent management, inspections and ending tenancies
- Understand the role and function of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT)
- Recognise how other regulatory obligations intersect with tenancy law in community housing
